Why Copycat Logos Can Hurt Your Business

As a designer, I've seen my fair share of branding mishaps over the years. However, one experience that stands out is when I witnessed two businesses with the same logo design. It was a surreal moment highlighting the importance of originality and creativity in branding.

Let me set the scene for you: After a long day of work, I’m casually scrolling through Instagram and see that one of my friends is launching her accessory business next week. The image she uploaded on the feed is the logo she created herself, and as a supportive friend, I’m excited about her entrepreneurial debut. I then later changed apps and got on TikTok. Scrolling endlessly as one does on that addicting app, I stumbled upon a photographer and noticed that her profile photo is a logo, and guess what? It is the same logo as my friend’s but with a different name.

Both logos had double capital letters in low opacity with the full name on top in sleek and modern fonts. The design was clean and minimalist and looked great for both brands. However, the fact that two businesses in entirely different industries used the same logo design was crazy to me!

After researching, I discovered that both businesses had used a predesigned logo on Canva. Since Canva is available for anyone with wifi and a computer, any business can go in there and choose any predesigned logo from their library and change the wording to their liking. Basically, any brand can miss out on the opportunity to create a customized and memorable brand identity if they go with the free option.

But I get it. Starting out with the free option seems like a smart option to start, but it can end up costing them missed sales, not connecting with their audience, and potentially having to purchase all new materials with new branding later on. But don’t get me wrong, I love Canva to create social media graphics and templates for my clients to use independently, but Canva’s logo feature is not my favorite.

As a brand designer, I was shocked and confused when I saw the two logos, which was a major red flag. Seeing two businesses with the same logo design made me realize the importance of originality in branding. When your brand identity is unique, it helps you stand out from the crowd and create a memorable brand. It also lets you avoid confusion with other businesses and makes it easier for customers to remember your business.

Investing in a unique and memorable brand identity is crucial for any business. This means developing a logo suite that truly reflects your business's values, mission, and personality. While some entrepreneurs may see hiring a professional designer as expensive or time-consuming, it's important to remember that a custom identity is the key to standing out and creating a strong brand image.
